How to Start a Jesus Journal

I am PASSIONATE about journaling. I take my little journal with me everywhere I think I might be inspired. To church, on airplanes, wherever I travel, I take my Jesus Journal with me. For me, journaling thoughts, hopes, fears, emotions, responses to scripture and life is such an amazing part of a thriving life with God. Much of the content of this blog often stems from these journals, from the moments of solitude when I talk with God, when I take care to listen to His leading. Today, I want to share with you the exact steps you can take to start your own Jesus Journal practice.

1. Get a good journal.

And I’m not talking like a composition book. I mean a real journal. I prefer one with small lines and thick pages so that I can fill it to the fullest. Most of the journals I’ve used in the past couple of months have been gifts (hey, this would be a great thing to put on your Christmas list if you haven’t already!), but when I need a new journal in the near future, here are some of the options I will definitely consider.

#1: This journal is actually super similar to what I have now, and I really like the simple pattern with elastic band to keep all my notes and pages right where I left them. The pages are a good thickness and the lines are nice and small. 🙂

#2: This journal has such a pretty cover, and the wire binding makes it nice and sturdy. The pages are also much easier to tear out if you ever wanted to pin them up on a wall or a whiteboard.

#3: Finally this journal is also very similar to one I used to have (before I filled all its pages!). It is beautiful and think (perfect for the pens I’ll show you next!). I loved carrying around something that looked so pretty, and the design almost makes it fell like it’s an ancient text (which is kind of cool).

Basically, find a journal you love and want to keep with you all the time. 🙂

2. Find something you LOVE to write with.

In order of my favorite pens to journal with:

#1: Paper Mate Flair Felt Tip Pens. These are seriously my favorite things. I raved about them over on my recommended products page too. It is so fun to have all the different colors because then the inside of my journal is beautiful! I take them everywhere and use them for to-do lists, journaling, school notes, and everything in between.

#2: Pilot Better Retractable Ballpoint Pen , Blue Fine Point. I love these so much. And I have a TON of them, so I will never run out. 🙂 I’m pretty sure the last time I got a pack was for Christmas last year because I love them enough to put them on my wishlist (there’s an idea for you!). I love that they are simply and easy, and they write smoothly.

#3: Pilot G2 Retractable Premium Gel Ink. My mom loves these so much that they are regularly on her wishlists as well. These pens are SO SMOOTH. It feels like you’re gliding across the page. They do smear a little sometimes, which is the only reason they are third on this list, but are other wise perfection. Smooth, simple, easy, perfect for you Jesus Journal.

3. Pick a passage of scripture, and start writing.

What I love to do is find a few verses that speak to me, copy them down in my journal, and respond to what God is teaching me through those verses. I most often write thoughts, questions, or prayers. If you don’t know where to start, here are a few passages to look up (these are all in New International Version, since that is my favorite 😉):

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Hebrews 10:23

Habakkuk 3:17-19

And there you have it! Three simple steps to starting a Jesus Journal. I highly, highly recommend this practice. It has given me so much peace and joy over the last several years, and it can only takes a few minutes. I have found my deepest reflection and most meaningful conversations with God in the times when I journal. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Yours,

  1. I love journaling but I haven’t been carrying it around with me. Because of that, I have had inspiration from God that I told myself I would remember later to write down and later would come and it would be gone. One of my New Year’s resolutions is to carry it around and write down everything He gives me!! I also love my jelly gel pens in all the beautiful colors and I love that you love all the colors too!!!!! Blessings sweet sister!! Merry Christmas!! Donna Miller XOXO

    1. That’s a great resolution! I love having a smaller journal so I can carry it everywhere, but I get that it can be hard to remember to bring it so you can joy those great ideas down. I hope that goes well for you Donna! 💕

  2. I really love this idea! I feel like I have like 10 different journals I use for different things, but I love the idea of having a journal solely for this purpose.

    1. Thank you! I think it’s so refreshing to have all these ideas and thoughts in one place, building a repertoire of scripture and reflections. I hope you decide to try it out Mary!
